Proper battery installation and sensor placement can help maintain reliable soil-moisture measurements and wireless operation.
Battery Care
The TCS024B uses: 3 × AAA batteries
The manual does not include batteries in the package.
For reliable operation:
- Use new alkaline batteries.
- Replace all batteries when the low-battery warning appears.
- Check for battery leakage.
- Avoid mixing batteries of different conditions or quality.
The troubleshooting section recommends reputable alkaline batteries and states that battery life may exceed 24 months under suitable conditions.
Probe Care
The sensing probe should remain in direct contact with the soil during measurement.
When moving the sensor:
- Remove it carefully.
- Do not bend the probe.
- Remove loose soil from the probe.
- Reinstall it to the BEST position.
Avoid forcing the probe through stones or hard material.
Placement Care
For reliable readings:
- Keep stones away from the sensing area.
- Insert the sensor to the marked BEST depth.
- Use an appropriate installation hole when soil is hard.
- Avoid repeatedly repositioning the sensor unless necessary.
Stones around the sensor are specifically identified in the manual as a possible cause of inaccurate readings.
Cleaning
The current TCS024B manual does not provide a chemical-cleaning or washing procedure.
For Zendesk, I recommend a conservative approach:
- Remove loose soil from the probe after removal.
- Wipe the exterior gently if needed.
- Keep the battery compartment dry.
- Do not use detergents or aggressive cleaning chemicals unless separately approved.
Waterproof Care
The specified protection rating is: IP54
Keep the rear battery cover correctly installed and the screws tightened during use.
The manual does not describe the product as suitable for immersion, so do not present it as a submersible sensor in Zendesk.
Long-Term Storage
The manual does not provide a dedicated long-term-storage procedure.
For extended non-use, I recommend:
- Remove the sensor from the soil.
- Remove loose soil from the probe.
- Allow the device exterior to dry.
- Remove the batteries if the sensor will be stored for a prolonged period.
- Store the unit in a dry, protected location.
- Install fresh batteries before reuse if needed.
This is maintenance guidance rather than an additional manufacturer-stated product function.
General Care Tips
Check battery condition regularly
Low battery prevents real-time measurement.
Keep the sensing area free of stones
Stones may affect measurement accuracy.
Maintain the correct installation depth
Use the BEST mark as the insertion reference.
Keep the phone nearby during direct connection
Short-range direct connection depends on the phone being close enough to the device.
Reset only when necessary
If connection fails:
- Hold the button for approximately 5 seconds, or
- Remove the batteries for approximately 10 seconds and reinstall them.
