RAINPOINT HCS026FRF – Maintenance & Care

This article provides routine battery, probe, placement, and storage guidance for the RAINPOINT HCS026FRF Smart Soil Moisture Sensor.

Proper battery installation and sensor placement can help maintain reliable soil-moisture measurements and communication with the RainPoint Home system.

Battery Care

The HCS026FRF uses: 3 × AAA alkaline batteries

Batteries are not included.

For reliable operation:

  • Use fresh alkaline batteries.
  • Install all batteries according to the polarity markings.
  • Replace the batteries when the low-battery indicator appears.
  • Keep the battery compartment dry.
  • Reinstall and tighten the battery-cover screws after replacement.

Probe Care

The soil probe should remain in direct contact with the soil during measurement.

When removing or relocating the sensor:

  • Pull it out carefully.
  • Do not bend the probe.
  • Remove loose soil from the probe.
  • Inspect the next installation location before reinserting it.

Avoid forcing the probe into hard soil.

Placement Care

For more reliable measurements:

  • Install the sensor to the BEST position.
  • Avoid stones around the probe.
  • Select the correct soil type in RainPoint Home.
  • Keep the sensor stable after installation.

Stones around the sensing area are specifically identified as a possible cause of inaccurate readings.

Cleaning

The current HCS026FRF manual does not provide a specific washing or chemical-cleaning procedure.

For Zendesk, use conservative guidance:

  • Remove loose soil by hand.
  • Wipe the exterior gently if needed.
  • Do not use aggressive cleaning chemicals.
  • Keep the battery compartment dry.

Waterproof Care

The specified protection rating is: IP54

This should not be described as full immersion protection.

Make sure:

  • The battery cover is correctly installed.
  • The screws remain tightened.
  • The device is not intentionally submerged in water.

Long-Term Storage

The current manual does not provide a dedicated long-term-storage procedure.

If the HCS026FRF will not be used for an extended period:

  • Remove the sensor from the soil.
  • Remove loose soil from the probe.
  • Allow the exterior to dry.
  • Remove the batteries for prolonged storage where appropriate.
  • Store the device in a dry, protected location.
  • Install fresh batteries before reconnecting if necessary.

General Care Tips

Check the battery indicator

Replace the batteries when the low-battery icon appears.

Avoid stones around the probe

Stones may reduce measurement accuracy.

Use the correct soil type

RainPoint Home provides six soil modes.

Do not force the sensor into hard soil

Create a suitable hole first.

Keep the Gateway firmware current

If pairing repeatedly fails, check the Gateway's Firmware Version and update it if necessary.

Reset only when needed

To reset:

  1. Remove all batteries.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Install three new AAA batteries.
  4. Wait for the rapidly flashing red LED.
