Why is my HTV405 leaking from the outlet, and how can I fix it?

A:
The HTV405 with a brass inlet and four plastic outlets is designed to provide reliable, leak-resistant performance when installed correctly. If water is leaking from one or more outlets, the issue is typically related to outlet sealing, installation method, hose condition, water pressure, or damage to the outlet threads or internal seals.

How to Properly Install and Maintain the HTV405

Applicable for Brass Inlet & Plastic Outlets

• Check and seal the outlet connections

Ensure that each hose or irrigation line is properly aligned with the outlet threads. Hand-tighten the connection securely. If needed, apply a rubber washer inside the hose fitting to improve sealing. Do not use Teflon tape on the plastic outlet threads unless specifically recommended.

• Inspect hose washers

Verify that the rubber washer inside the hose connector is present, flexible, and undamaged. A missing or worn washer is a common cause of outlet leaks.

• Install the inlet correctly

Apply Teflon® (PTFE) tape to the male threads of the water source before attaching the brass inlet. Tighten securely but do not overtighten.

• Install new batteries

  • Use new AA alkaline, non-rechargeable batteries only

  • Use one battery brand and replace all batteries at the same time

  • Do not mix old and new batteries or different brands

• Test the valve

Turn on the water slowly and run a manual watering cycle for each zone. Check all outlet connections carefully for leaks.

Why the HTV405 May Leak from the Outlet or Stop Working

  • Missing, worn, or damaged hose washers

  • Cross-threading at the outlet connection

  • Overtightening that cracks or deforms plastic outlets

  • Loose hose or irrigation line connections

  • Excessive water pressure

  • Freezing damage

Tips for Reliable Operation

  • Always check that hose washers are installed and in good condition

  • Hand-tighten plastic outlet fittings only

  • Avoid overtightening to prevent cracking

  • Keep water pressure within the recommended range

  • Drain and store the valve indoors during freezing conditions
