RAINPOINT HCS021FRF – Maintenance & Care

This article provides routine battery, probe, installation, weather-protection, and storage guidance for the RAINPOINT HCS021FRF Soil & Moisture Sensor.

Proper installation and regular battery checks help maintain reliable measurements and communication with the Smart+ system.

Battery Care

The HCS021FRF uses: 3 × AA batteries

Batteries are not included.

For reliable operation:

  • Use batteries of the same type and condition.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries.
  • Do not mix different battery types.
  • Replace all batteries when power becomes low.
  • Make sure the rear battery cover is correctly installed after replacement.

The manual specifically warns against mixing different battery types or old and new batteries.

Soil Probe Care

When moving or reinstalling the HCS021FRF:

  • Remove it carefully from the soil.
  • Do not force or bend the sensing section.
  • Remove loose soil from the exterior.
  • Check the new installation area for stones.
  • Reinstall the sensor vertically.

Do not force the product into hard soil.

Dig a suitable hole first.

Light Sensor Care

The built-in light sensor should remain above the soil and exposed to the surrounding light environment.

Keep the top of the sensor free from:

  • Soil
  • Leaves
  • Heavy debris
  • Other objects that may block the light sensor

Installation Care

For accurate measurements:

  • Keep the device vertical.
  • Bury the sensing section below the MAX mark.
  • Keep the upper sensor body above ground.
  • Avoid stones around the soil probe.

Cold-Weather Care

The manual specifically states:

Under freezing temperatures, keep the sensor away from snow to reduce potential freeze damage.

If severe freezing or snow is expected:

  • Remove the sensor from exposed snow conditions where practical.
  • Allow the exterior to dry.
  • Store it in a protected location until suitable conditions return.

Waterproof Care

The specified waterproof rating is: IPX5

Make sure the battery cover and screws are securely installed before outdoor use.

IPX5 should not be described as full submersion protection.

Long-Term Storage

If the HCS021FRF will not be used for an extended period:

  • Remove the sensor from the soil.
  • Remove loose soil from the probe.
  • Allow the exterior to dry.
  • Remove the batteries for prolonged storage where appropriate.
  • Store the sensor in a dry, protected location.
  • Install fresh batteries before reconnecting if necessary.

General Care Tips

Keep the battery cover secure

The manual instructs users to tighten the screws before installation.

Avoid stones around the sensor

Stones can affect measurement accuracy.

Keep the sensor within communication range

The specified range is up to approximately 60 m under suitable conditions.

Check the Gateway if the sensor goes offline

An offline Gateway may also cause the sensor to appear offline.

Select the correct soil type

Use the app's Soil Type setting to match the growing environment.
