This page serves as the support and reference center for the RAINPOINT HCS021FRF Soil & Moisture Sensor.
If the model number on your product is HCS021FRF, you are in the correct place.
The HCS021FRF is a smart outdoor sensor designed to monitor soil moisture, surface temperature, and light intensity. It works as a sub-device within the RAINPOINT Smart+ system and requires a compatible RAINPOINT Smart+ Gateway before the sensor can be added to the system.
What is the HCS021FRF?
The RAINPOINT HCS021FRF is a soil and environmental sensor designed to provide additional growing-condition data for a RAINPOINT Smart+ irrigation system.
The sensor monitors:
- Soil Moisture
- Surface Temperature
- Light Intensity
After the sensor is connected through a compatible Smart+ Gateway, current measurements can be viewed in the app.
The app can also display historical moisture, temperature, and light-intensity data to help users better understand changing conditions around their plants.
Key Capabilities Include
- Soil moisture monitoring
- Surface temperature monitoring
- Light-intensity monitoring
- 0%–100% moisture measurement range
- 0–200,000 lux light-intensity range
- Soil-type selection

Before You Start
1. Connect the Smart+ Gateway first
The HCS021FRF is a sub-device.
Before adding the soil sensor, make sure a compatible RAINPOINT Smart+ Gateway has already been connected to the app.
2. Open the Gateway device page
In the app, either:
- Tap Add Device, or
- Open the Gateway and select Sub-devices
to begin adding the HCS021FRF.
3. Install the batteries
The HCS021FRF uses: 3 × AA batteries
Batteries are not included.
Remove the rear battery cover, install the batteries correctly, and securely reinstall the cover.
After the batteries are installed, the indicator flashes rapidly red to indicate that the sensor is ready for connection.
4. Keep the sensor close to the Gateway during setup
During initial pairing, place the HCS021FRF close to the Gateway.
The app will search for the sensor and connect automatically.
If the initial connection fails, press and hold the Operation Button to reset the sensor and try again.
5. Confirm the sensor data
After a successful connection, the device page displays:
- Soil Moisture
- Surface Temperature
- Light Intensity
6. Choose the installation location
Dig an appropriate hole that allows the sensing section of the probe to be completely inserted into the soil.
The manual illustrates a hole depth of approximately 20 cm.
7. Install the sensor vertically
Place the HCS021FRF vertically downward into the soil.
For accurate measurement, make sure the section of the probe below the MAX mark is buried in the soil.
Do not bury the entire sensor body.
8. Select the appropriate soil type
After installation, open the sensor settings in the app and select the soil type that best matches the growing area.
